Building through the Bear
Though the markets may be down, we will keep moving onward and upward for our community.
Times are hard in crypto — and in general. Russia’s imperialistic war in Ukraine drags on, a recession looms, and the volume of NFT sales — though spiking to all-time highs at times — has dwindled down. The recent collapse of the pegged-to-a-dollar UST and its backing coin LUNA devastated the overall crypto market. Naysayers are quick to celebrate the death of crypto, though, if history is any indication, those celebrations will be short-lived. Markets recover, but we are undoubtedly deep in a bear one for now. But smol farm is here to stay — to build, to continue to grow, and to prepare for better times.
smol farm just started with two lesbians finding a place to call home — to start a little farm. Since then, we were saved from losing the property by the mint-out of the Dastardly Ducks in January 2022. That project got so much more love and attention than we ever expected, and it spawned a sister collection, Yo Kitties. While we lack the resources of places like Yuga Labs to go as fast, we are building out the world they inhabit more. The centerpiece of this will be smol garden, the social media playground we are building for these collections — but it will take time.
But we are already rewarding holders now. On April 20th, we dropped holders of the cats a special bag of catnip and the holders of the ducks some special “medicated” peas. These are just the first in periodic cute airdrops we will be sending out to people on Polygon simply for owning these NFTs. We hope they will put as much of a smile on your face as ours — and we have so many more in store.
Our first official derivative collection will also finally be released soon, the Dastardly Moonducks. These will also will be a free reward just for holding one of the original Dastardly Ducks. Don’t have a duck? Don’t worry. Some will be available to the general public to mint as well — and, of course, secondary markets. Each will depict a Dastardly Duck in a pixel art style. While we have no similar project to announce for Yo Kitties, rest assured we are also thinking about how that might be extended beyond its own genesis collection.
We also plan on branching out into indie game development. For our longer-term gaming projects, we need to invest more time and resources before we have much to share, but we also are eager to explore how NFTs can be used not just in games — but as games. While it is easy to think of an NFT as mere art, they can be used for so much more. We were impressed by Flappy Moonbirds, a generative collection, where each token is unique aesthetically, but all are a playable flappy bird clone. Anyone can then play any particular instance of the game through sites like OpenSea — not just the owner. To help you bare the bear, we are working on some cute mini games for you.
The smol farm site itself will also continue to get more features and tools. We are working on integration with LooksRare to get a more complete picture of where and when sales are happening. Additionally, are finally posting content on our YouTube channel again too. We are also working on finally being able to offer merch — including cute stickers of which NFT holders will be able to get a one-time “IRL airdrop” for free. We want to ensure smol.farm remains the ultimate hub for catching up on the full experience of our cozy little farm and the cute worlds built here.
None of this is to say there is anything especially big and exciting to expect for us to soon, just that, in a time when much better funded web3 teams are rugpulling or ghosting, we remain committed to helping continue to build our projects — and, when the time is right, release new ones. Well before we ever released the Dastardly Ducks, we dreamed of releasing cool creative projects together, and, as those who came and left for the quick cash grab filter out, we hope our work will stand out — as it first did when it saved our humble home.
