Here's to a Year
One year in, smol farm gazette both feels so new and has grown so much. We're grateful for the support.
smol farm gazette is now just over a year old. Our first post, about the need to move gig economy-style work away from centralized corporations, was posted on June 4th, 2021. Since then, a lot has changed, both in the world and for us. After coming close to losing the farm in January, we rallied the support we needed by selling cute cartoon duck NFTs. Since then, things still are not perfect, but we are turning our little farm into something more — a studio that makes cute and interesting things people love.
We are hoping in the coming months to truly establish a solid foundation for the farm both in the real world and digitally. We are working on ways to bring our creative efforts to other mediums — both those already explored through our NFT collections and ones that are yet to be revealed. On the way there, we’ve released free pixel art ducks for those who bought the original and made cute kitties with Iron Chef Cat Cora. What a whirlwind!
Yet this humble little Substack feels like it is just getting started, with me still writing most of the articles. While we’ve made most of the content free to everyone, having a limited amount of paid content and limiting comments to subscribers has enabled this to bring in a small amount of extra money for us — which is deeply appreciated, even if not something that can pay the bills.
Articles on here have focused on a myriad of subjects, but the two things we gravitate towards most are technology and agriculture — especially our projects in them. While we have covered a myriad of subjects, what seems to resonate with people most is not just hearing the personal connection of our activities but helping educate others about them as well. Many have expressed how our articles about making NFTs helped inspire them and give them direction in making their own.
The controversy surrounding NFT technology has also cost us some of our audience, though we hope those bothered by this choice in direction will filter back in time. Blockchains clearly have a large part to play in our technological future, and concerns over power consumption are solved by use of consensus systems like Proof of Stake — which Ethereum should finally adopt soon.
While it may sound trite in the web3 space to say that you are still early, we are still early in smol farm’s growth and success, despite how exciting much of the past several months were. Despite the market downturns, we are continuing to work hard to make things people will love, hopefully educating people — ourselves included in many ways — in the process. Thank you for coming along for this journey that is just getting started.
