Introducing Yo Kitties
The next step in smol farm's cute NFT-driven world is a collection of cats made with Iron Chef Cat Cora.
When we launched Dastardly Ducks, it was an act of desperation. We were many months behind on our bills, and it seemed like a practical way to pull together our talents in a unique way to crowdfund the money we needed. Since their runaway success, so many doors were suddenly opened for us. We did not initially plan on doing another similar collection so soon — until we were approached by Cat Cora. So we made Yo Kitties together.
At first, our only promise was to save our home and document raising a flock of ducks — something we are in the process of planning, though wanting to build a dedicated roost building for the much larger flock we will have first. But we suddenly have a community wanting more than just JPEGs of ducks. We have an opportunity to build a much bigger world.
Both of us here at smol farm are long-time fans of Iron Chef. We both love Cat Cora in particular. We admire her for being the first woman Iron Chef and a lesbian trailblazer, as lesbians ourselves. While we are very interested in collaborations, we want to make sure the people and projects we work on align with our values — and this provided a purrfect opportunity.
To avoid oversaturating the market with NFTs in this world, we are only releasing half as many cats at this time: 5,000. We expect, as the market for NFTs grows — along with smol farm itself — we can release more collections of this sort in the future. But it is uncommon for profile pic-oriented NFT collections to release follow-ups this soon.
As previously announced, both of us are now working full time to try to turn smol farm into a financially sustainable project. Some of the proceeds will be going to us as well as to Cat Cora, but we want to turn this success into a way to raise money for good causes. Cat’s charity of choice is the one she co-founded, Chefs for Humanity.
We want to do something that resonates with our own story, so we are looking into setting up a charitable organization to help small farms and homesteaders in need. While we are still working out the exact details, we are interested in potentially making this charity as a DAO, where members of the smol farm community can review and vote on the allocation of funds.
We want to explore these cute characters in media other than profile picture-oriented NFTs, so we are planning on releasing a webcomic as well as games featuring them. We hope the webcomic will also be a way that those who do not (yet?) appreciate NFTs to appreciate what we are building in a free, fun, accessible way.
Though this is a big next step, we are still just scratching the surface — with a cute kitty claw, obviously. We are immensely grateful to all of the love and support people have shown to the Dastardly Ducks, and we want to both make more stuff that you will love as well as attract more people to our budding community. The future for smol farm is as bright as a sunbeam for spending the day curled up cozy like a cat, until it’s time to say gmeowning once more.
